Chapter I
The Design
what this deck wants
Written by the coach from this decklist

Card Draw
- Doctor Doom is a Grixis discard-and-draw combo-control deck that weaponizes card advantage into both incremental damage and hard combo kills. Doom's discard trigger punishes opponents whenever you ditch lands, and his combat connive turns your Villains into growing threats while feeding your graveyard. The deck floods the board with cheap draw engines (Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Black Market Connections), leverages a low 2.86 average CMC to deploy fast, and closes with dedicated combo lines built around Peer into the Abyss and Ultron, Unlimited while backing them with counters and removal.

how the game unfolds

Ramp
- EARLY: Land, cheap mana rock (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, a Talisman), and a draw engine — Mystic Remora or Rhystic Study turn 1-3 is ideal. Land your commander when protected. MID: Snowball card advantage while conniving Villains each combat for +1/+1 counters and chip damage; deploy Black Market Connections and Bone Miser to convert cards into mana and life pressure. Use discard outlets (Faithless Looting, Windfall) plus Doom's land-discard trigger to bleed opponents. LATE: Assemble a combo — Peer into the Abyss with Psychosis Crawler or Teferi's Ageless Insight, or the Ultron + Prowler + Ashnod's Altar engine — protected by Counterspell, Negate, Swan Song, and Deadly Rollick.
- Ramp (9, repeatable): Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone, Talisman of Dominance, Talisman of Indulgence, Grim Monolith, Ashnod's Altar, Bone Miser, Relic of Sauron — these make every future turn bigger and get Doom (4 CMC) down a turn early. Burst mana (8, one-shot): Lotus Petal, Dark Ritual, Jeska's Will, Currency Converter, Black Market Connections, Monument to Endurance, Green Goblin, Nemesis, Surly Badgersaur — these spike a single explosive turn to jam Peer into the Abyss or chain a combo. The curve is low and aggressive (11 cards at 0-1, 18 at two, 17 at three), so the deck acts early; the few 5+ drops (Peer, Ad Nauseam, Doctor Octopus, Psychosis Crawler) are payoffs, not clunk. The engine that keeps gas flowing is the dense draw suite — 23 advantage sources — headlined by the Rhystic/Remora taxes and connive/discard loops.
Chapter V
The Opening
what to keep, what to ship
Written by the coach from this decklist

Ramp
- Keep 3-4 lands with at least one draw engine or ramp piece and a way to use your mana. The dream: two-three lands, a Sol Ring or Talisman, and Rhystic Study / Mystic Remora / Black Market Connections. A hand with Sol Ring + commander + a land is a snap keep. Ship hands with 1-2 lands and no cheap ramp, or all-payoff hands (multiple 5+ drops, no acceleration and no early draw). You want to be developing an advantage engine by turn 3, not sitting on combo pieces you can't cast.

The Close
how it ends

Card Draw
- Combo kill with Peer into the Abyss + Psychosis Crawler — Peer draws you half your library, each draw pings every opponent for 1 via the Crawler, ending the table.
- Infinite draw loop: Peer into the Abyss + Teferi's Ageless Insight doubles the draw into an infinite-draw engine, then win off a Crawler/Doom ping or a subsequent Peer at another player.
- Artifact-token combo: Ultron, Unlimited + Prowler, Clawed Thief + Ashnod's Altar generates near-infinite artifact tokens, mana, and connive/draw triggers to mill, drain, or deck the table.
- Incremental drain + Voltron beatdown: connive Villains with Doom for +1/+1 counters and menace, layered with Doom's land-discard 2-life triggers, Glint-Horn Buccaneer, and Psychosis Crawler pings.
Chapter VII
Assemblies
pieces that lock together
Written by the coach from this decklist

Peer sets your hand to draw half your library, each draw triggers the Crawler for 1 damage to each opponent.
- Resolve Teferi's Ageless Insight or ensure a draw payoff is out, and have Psychosis Crawler on the battlefield.
- Cast Peer into the Abyss targeting yourself.
- Draw half your library; each draw triggers Psychosis Crawler, dealing 1 damage to each opponent per card.
- Opponents lose life equal to roughly half your deck — enough to end the table.

Peer into the Abyss + Teferi's Ageless Insight → infinite/doubled card draw and draw triggers, fueling any draw-payoff to lethal.
- Have Teferi's Ageless Insight on the battlefield so draws are doubled.
- Cast Peer into the Abyss targeting yourself.
- Draw effects double via Teferi's Ageless Insight, snowballing your hand and draw triggers.
- Convert the massive draw into a kill with a Psychosis Crawler ping or a redirected Peer at an opponent.

Ultron, Unlimited + Prowler, Clawed Thief + Ashnod's Altar → near-infinite artifact tokens, colorless mana, and ETB/LTB/sacrifice/draw triggers.
- Have Ultron, Unlimited, Prowler, Clawed Thief, and Ashnod's Altar in play.
- Sacrifice an artifact token to Ashnod's Altar for two mana; Ultron returns/creates artifact value and Prowler loops connive/draw triggers.
- Repeat the sacrifice-and-recur loop for near-infinite mana, tokens, and triggers.
- Sink the value into drawing your deck, milling opponents, or overwhelming the board.

Surly Badgersaur + Tectonic Reformation + Dakmor Salvage → infinite self-mill and self-discard triggers.
- Have Tectonic Reformation and Dakmor Salvage in play with Surly Badgersaur active.
- Discard Dakmor Salvage (via Reformation's cycling of lands / a discard outlet), triggering its dredge to mill.
- Return Dakmor Salvage by dredging, then discard it again — looping self-mill.
- Grind through your library generating self-discard triggers (feeding Doom's land-discard drain) as long as you choose.
Chapter VIII
Handling
counsel and common errors
Written by the coach from this decklist

Card Draw
- Prioritize resolving a draw engine (Remora/Rhystic/BMC) before committing your commander — the deck runs on advantage, and Doom is replaceable but the engine snowball isn't.
- Sequence discard around Doom: discarding LAND cards triggers his 2-damage-per-opponent drain, so hold cheap looters (Faithless Looting, Frantic Search) and land-cyclers (Tectonic Reformation) for when Doom is out.
- Don't jam Peer into the Abyss as a raw draw spell unless you have Psychosis Crawler or Teferi's Ageless Insight to convert it — otherwise you're just gifting yourself a huge hand and a low library.
- Hold your counters (Counterspell, Negate, Swan Song) to protect the combo turn rather than trading them early; Deadly Rollick is free with Doom out, so keep it for the removal you'd otherwise have to pay for.
- Protect Doom with Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, or Mithril Coat before relying on combat connive triggers — losing him mid-combat wastes the tempo.
- Watch your life total: Ad Nauseam, Bone Miser, and Black Market Connections all cost life, and Grixis has no lifegain to spare, so plan combo turns before you're too low to fire them.
