Chapter I
The Design
what this deck wants
Written by the coach from this decklist

Token Generation
- Kumena is a Merfolk tribal go-wide deck that turns a flood of small blue-green fish into an engine. Kumena's three tap-abilities — unblockable, draw a card, and pump the whole team — mean every untapped Merfolk is fuel for card advantage and counters. The deck grinds value through lords and token-makers, snowballs +1/+1 counters, and closes either by swinging with a buffed unblockable army or by assembling one of several tribal combo lines (Deeproot Pilgrimage + Intruder Alarm, Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter) for an infinite finish.

Chapter IV
Sequence
how the game unfolds
Written by the coach from this decklist

Ramp
- EARLY: land, a mana rock (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Talisman of Curiosity) or a dork/ramp spell (Nature's Lore, Kodama's Reach, Kiora's Follower), then start deploying cheap Merfolk. Curve out Cursecatcher, Lord of Atlantis, Deeproot Elite. MID: land Kumena and a token engine (Deeproot Pilgrimage, Deeproot Waters) or a draw engine (Kindred Discovery, Guardian Project). Now every turn you tap three Merfolk to draw and tap five to grow the team — you're generating cards and pressure simultaneously. LATE: either overwhelm with Kumena's team-wide counters plus unblockable, or fire a combo — Wanderwine Prophets/Deeproot Pilgrimage for infinite turns, Kumena+Pilgrimage+Intruder Alarm for infinite draw and counters, or Dramatic Reversal+Isochron Scepter for infinite mana into a Kumena draw.
- Ramp is 7 and REPEATABLE: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Talisman of Curiosity, Kodama's Reach, Nature's Lore, plus creature-based Kiora's Follower and Cryptolith Rite (which turns every Merfolk into a mana dork). Harvest Season scales with your board. Burst mana: none — no Treasures or rituals, so you don't get explosive one-shot turns; your acceleration is steady. The curve is low and wide (avg 2.77, with 27 two-drops and 20 three-drops), built to flood the board fast. Cryptolith Rite is the standout ramp engine here — with a wide Merfolk board it produces silly amounts of mana and enables the token-combo lines.
Chapter V
The Opening
what to keep, what to ship
Written by the coach from this decklist

Ramp
- Keep 3-4 lands with at least one early accelerant (Sol Ring, a Talisman/Signet, or Nature's Lore/Kodama's Reach) and a couple of cheap Merfolk to start the board. Kumena himself is a fine include but you want board presence to feed his abilities, so a hand with lands + two or three fish is better than lands + Kumena and nothing else. Ship hands of 1-2 lands, and ship all-payoff hands with no early Merfolk or ramp — this deck needs bodies on board to do anything.

The Close
how it ends
Written by the coach from this decklist

Utility
- Go-wide beatdown: buff the team with Kumena's five-Merfolk counter ability plus lords (Lord of Atlantis, Master of the Pearl Trident, Merfolk Sovereign) and swing, using Kumena's unblockable ability or Rogue's Passage to push damage through.
- Simic Ascendancy / Karn's Bastion counter-pile: pump +1/+1 counters with Hardened Scales, Deeproot Elite, Herald of Secret Streams and win off Simic Ascendancy's 20-counter alt-win.
- Thassa's Oracle wins after drawing your library via an infinite-draw combo.
- Infinite turns via Wanderwine Prophets + Deeproot Pilgrimage to take over the game.
- Infinite mana from Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter funneled into Kumena's draw ability to deck yourself into Thassa's Oracle.
Chapter VII
Assemblies
pieces that lock together
Written by the coach from this decklist

+ mana rocks producing 2+
Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter (+ mana rocks producing 2+) → infinite mana and infinite untaps
- Imprint a 2-or-less instant (ideally a mana-producing one, or use with rocks totaling 2+) — cast Isochron Scepter imprinting Dramatic Reversal
- Have nonland mana sources on board producing 3+ total (Sol Ring, Talisman, Signet, dorks)
- Activate Isochron Scepter to cast Dramatic Reversal, untapping all nonland permanents
- Tap the untapped rocks for more mana than the activation cost, netting mana each loop
- Repeat for infinite mana, then dump it into Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca's draw ability to draw your deck
- Win with Thassa's Oracle

Wanderwine Prophets + Deeproot Pilgrimage → infinite turns
- Have Deeproot Pilgrimage in play
- Cast/attack with Wanderwine Prophets and connect (or champion a Merfolk) to trigger its clash-for-extra-turn ability
- Deeproot Pilgrimage makes Merfolk tokens as you cast/tap Merfolk, refueling the champion requirement
- Take repeated extra turns, attacking each turn to reset the loop
- Continue for infinite turns

Intruder Alarm + Deeproot Pilgrimage → infinite Merfolk tokens and untaps
- Have Deeproot Pilgrimage and Intruder Alarm in play
- Cast a Merfolk spell — Deeproot Pilgrimage triggers, making a 1/1 Merfolk token
- The token's ETB triggers Intruder Alarm, untapping all your creatures
- Tap creatures to a Merfolk-tapping effect (Kumena, Cryptolith Rite) to cast/produce again — loop makes infinite tokens and untaps

Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca + Deeproot Pilgrimage + Intruder Alarm → infinite card draw, tokens, and +1/+1 counters
- Have Deeproot Pilgrimage, Intruder Alarm, and Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca in play
- Tap Merfolk to Kumena's ETB-generating loop; each Merfolk token entering triggers Intruder Alarm to untap everything
- Tap three untapped Merfolk to Kumena to draw a card, then repeat
- Each loop nets a token (via Deeproot Pilgrimage), a draw, and lets you tap five for team counters
- Repeat for infinite draw, infinite tokens, and infinite +1/+1 counters, then win

soft lock
Lullmage Mentor + Intruder Alarm → counter every opponent spell (soft lock)
- Have Intruder Alarm in play
- Cast Lullmage Mentor — it makes a Merfolk token when you tap Merfolk to counter
- When an opponent casts a spell, tap Merfolk to Lullmage Mentor to counter it; the resulting token ETB triggers Intruder Alarm, untapping your Merfolk
- Repeat each opposing spell — you have untapped Merfolk available to counter everything they cast

Deeproot Pilgrimage + Kiora's Follower + Forensic Researcher → infinite Merfolk tokens
- Have Deeproot Pilgrimage and Forensic Researcher in play with Kiora's Follower
- Cast a Merfolk — Deeproot Pilgrimage makes a token
- Use Forensic Researcher's tap ability, then untap it with Kiora's Follower
- Loop the untap to keep generating token triggers for infinite Merfolk tokens

The Watcher in the Water + Kindred Discovery → infinite/near-infinite card draw and tokens
- Have Kindred Discovery in play naming Merfolk (or Kraken)
- Cast/ETB The Watcher in the Water, whose triggers make tokens/draw off Merfolk entering
- Each Merfolk entering draws a card off Kindred Discovery, chaining more creatures and triggers
- Loop for near-infinite draw and tokens, then win with Thassa's Oracle

Mutavault + Deeproot Pilgrimage + Intruder Alarm → infinite colorless mana and tokens
- Have Deeproot Pilgrimage and Intruder Alarm in play with Mutavault
- Activate Mutavault to make it a Merfolk creature
- A Merfolk token entering (from Pilgrimage) triggers Intruder Alarm, untapping Mutavault
- Tap Mutavault for colorless, animate/loop to generate tokens and mana infinitely
Chapter VIII
Handling
counsel and common errors
Written by the coach from this decklist

Utility
- Sequence Kumena's abilities carefully — untap effects (Seedborn Muse, Kiora's Follower, Intruder Alarm) let you double-dip on tap-three-draw and tap-five-counters in a single turn cycle.
- Don't overextend into an open board wipe — you run no wipes of your own and rebuild slowly, so hold a few Merfolk in hand and lean on Heroic Intervention/Inspiring Call to protect the team.
- Deeproot Pilgrimage plus Intruder Alarm is your fastest kill — protect that pair and be ready to counter removal aimed at either half with your dense Counterspell suite.
- Save Cyclonic Rift for an overload swing turn, not as early spot removal — bouncing the whole table while your army stands is often lethal.
- Watch for the Thassa's Oracle line: any infinite-draw combo wins on the spot, so don't fizzle by drawing out without Oracle in hand or castable.
- Cryptolith Rite is a beacon — opponents know it enables combos, so deploy it when you can immediately convert the mana, and keep counter backup.
